to the catalogue of music by Polish-born, Soviet-era composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg,
a major voice in postwar Soviet music. His late "chamber symphonies"
are in fact rich, large-scale works, created in a valedictory burst of inspiration
during the final years of the Soviet Union in an atmosphere of increasing artistic
freedom, music that is at once accessible and daring in melody and harmony.
