In 1946, Benjamin Britten's opera Peter Grimes had brought him to international prominence. A decade later, John Culshaw and his engineering team at Decca implemented a revolutionary new technique for recording opera in stereo following a number of successful experiments: place the singers on a separately miked soundstage behind the orchestra. The first complete recording using this technique was Peter Grimes, which created a sensation both for its artistic and technical quality. Alto is pleased to make this essential recording available for the first time at an unbeatable value price.
